Choice Hotels wants airport-owned site near Mall of America

Finance & Commerce  reports that Choice Hotels International plans to buy a site near Mall of America in Bloomington, which is rapidly turning into a hotspot for hotels.

There is a proposed $3.51 million deal between Rockville, Md.-based Choice (NYSE: CHH) and the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns the four-arce parcel. The MAC plans to discuss the sale at a meeting today.

Choice owns the Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, Clarion and MainStay Suites chains. The new property would likely be an extended-stay property, MAC officials told the paper.

The area around the site is the subject of a flurry of interest from hotel developers. McGough Cos. is building a 302-room Hyatt Regency near the Mall of America, while Park City, Utah-based Terratron wants to build a four-story, 118-room TownPlace Suites by Marriott nearby on Lindau Lane. The Mall of America’s expansion will include a 342-room JW Marriott luxury hotel to be owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

And the MAC is seeking a developer for a 250-room hotel on the airport property itself.
